Balthasar

Address: 11 Raekoja Square
EE-10146 Tallinn, Estonia
Open: 12.00 - 24.00

A grandly wooden, spacious interior and a stupendous view of Town Hall Square give you a sense of an aristocratic position when dining at the Balthasar. Simultaneously, the establishment refers to itself as a "garlic restaurant". The Balthasar's menu includes a garlic factor (count the number of bulbs next to your choice to determine its anti-vampire potency) for each meal with garlic in it. A good selection of soups and starters featuring livestock and game from land, sea and air.

72 seats: three dining rooms.

A la carte restaurant in the very heart of Tallinn in Town Hall Square. Excellent European cuisine. The Karl Friedrich's ground floor is an elegant, eclectically decorated fish restaurant where walls are literally covered with paintings of, well, fish. The menu is long and varied. The even more formal upstairs is decidedly geared toward meat-eating client?le on a higher budget. You can also try the cellar bar, Karli Kelder, for a casual drink.

Classical A la carte restaurant. Offering a variety of seafood, as well as meat dishes. The fish-wary can stick with lamb, veal and chicken, while their fish-loving friends can choose from a long list of charcoal-grilled courses.

Le Bonaparte

Address: 45 Pikk Street
EE-10133 Tallinn, Estonia
Open: 12.00 -24.00, closed Sun

Le Bonaparte is very impressive. The Medieval atmosphere is mixed unexpectedly well with continental class. This exquisitely restored 17th-century structure is a fitting venue for the venerable traditions of French cuisine. The menu changes with the seasons. Le Cellier, Bonaparte's cellar, provides a chance for delicious French culinary experience as well, at more Tallinn-like prices. The menu is, naturally, exclusively French; everything they do, they do well. Save room for dessert!

The 'Tourist Menu' will get you a few set courses for about the same price as the average main. The spaghetti is very well-buttered. Delicious Italian dishes accompanied by Latin - American music.

Cathedral

Address: 2 Lossiplats /1 Toom-Kooli
Street EE-10130 Tallinn, Estonia
Open: 12.00 - 23.00, Sun 12.00 - 18.00

A wonderful restaurant located right next to Riigikogu (parliament) and just opposite Aleksander Nevski Cathedral. This high-class establishment serves a combination of bourgeois French and Russian cuisine to a discerning, dressed-up clientele. Eccentric touches like swirling blue mirror frames and court jester seat covers take the edge off its formality, as does the live piano music. Reservations are recommended. One of the best restaurants in Tallinn.

Located in the Old Town. A handsome, traditional Mediterranean-styled restaurant with ceiling paintings in good shape. Delicious international cuisine. Two different menus on two different levels. Head downstairs to the vaulted cellar for a more casual meal, or enjoy the formality of the ground-floor dining room. The Donkey's Stable gets high praise for serving Saaremaa beer. Music ranges from classical to modern jazz.

Gnoom

Address: 2 Viru Street EE-0001 Tallinn, Estonia Open: Sun - Thurs 11.00 - 23.00, Fri - Sat 11.00 - 01.00

A restaurant with a medieval interior located in the Old Town. Ever-greenstyle. Start your meal with something called the 'hot prawn experience' and move on to stewed elk rolls as a main. An Old Town classic, Gnoom seems to be constantly reinventing its menu if not its image. Dining in this Medieval foyer is a novel experience, even when there's 70s lounge music playing. The food is excellent.

70 seats: two dining rooms

Charital

Address: 6 Kloostri Tee
EE-11911 Tallinn, Estonia
Open: 12.00 - 24.00

A super posh restaurant with lovely views of the Pirita River, just where it runs into the sea. A blindingly bright but painstakingly neat, upscale atmosphere. Tasty international cuisine. The food is good and features fresh lobster, plucked live from an in-house tank - a speciality that is still not too easy to come by in these parts.

Carina

A venerable player on Tallinn's restaurant scene, the Carina has managed to keep pace only in terms of prices. Nested on the embankment above the Estonian Exhibition Centre, the well-known restaurant has an excellent sea view from its terrace, and the garden here is probably one of the most pleasant dining environments in town. Come for the unique and sophisticated musical performances.

A cosy seafood restaurant in what was once old Tallinn's executioner's house. It is on the local lists of Tallinn's best restaurants. The menu includes a huge variety of seafood. Try the slimy lamprey and the eel (both Estonian favourites). Those more choosy about seafood will find an excellent sea tiger (a mild white fish) with spinach and berry sauce. Expect to linger over your meal. A wide choice of wines.

70 seats: three separated rooms

Argentina

Address: 19 Parnu Mnt.
EE-10151 Tallinn, Estonia
Open: 12.00 - 24.00

A good South-American theme restaurant. Original Argentine cuisine. The burnt aroma from the flaming grill is part of Argentina's charm. It is also an indication of what is on the menu: steaks, salmon and other grille-type items, all of which are prepared before well-dressed patrons in the dark and elegant dining room. Grilled meats are cooked on an open stove in the middle of the restaurant. The weekend floorshow features red-hot Latin dancing.
