The port of Klaipeda, today a fishing and manufacturing center, is Lithuania's oldest city (it dates back to the 7th century). Although much of its original architecture has been destroyed through the years, the city has a distinctly Germanic look from its 700 years of Prussian rule.

Sights include the Picture Gallery's sculpture collection (we like the statues in the adjacent park best), the History Museum of Lithuania Minor, and the Protestant Church of St. George (on Market Square). Shoppers should visit Mantas Street, where the city's most fashionable boutiques are located.

City Tour

City sightseeing tour starting at the Central Market Square in the Old Town. Then you make your way to the Northeast through a net of 18th century streets. Short stop at the Blacksmith's Museum. The bulk of the museum's collection is made up of iron crosses and fence pieces. As you walk, be sure to notice half-timbered or fachwerk houses, for which Klaipeda is known. You will take a break in the Theatre Square and enjoy there the Simon Dach's lovely Annchen von Tharau sculpture, the diffident girl posing in front of the Drama Theatre, that engenders as much mystery as Mona Liza. Then you will visit the Old Post Office. Then you will visit the Clock Museum

Old Post

The red brick neo-gothic style post office building, Designed by H. Schode in 1893 is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.

The symmetrical interior has colorful frescos depicting birds carrying letters. The bell tower has 44m . On the weekends you can enjoy the amazing sound of the 48-bells carillon , the biggest musical instrument in Lithuania. The Old post building is the rare example of Prussian architecture in the town.

Theatre Square

The heart of the old town is the Theatre Square named after the Neoclassical theatre. In front of the theatre is the fountain of Anna, one of the Simon Dach 's(Klaipeda-born poet), literary heroines .It’s the place of most significant sites in the history of town. It’s also a romantic place of dates- the square is always full of youngsters.

Blacksmiths' Museum

Museums can roughly be grouped into two main types, the active and the passive. Whereas the passive types are often hit and miss affairs, the active ones are always worth a visit. This one is no exception, a real working forge combined with a museum, and the effect is lovely. Hot and sweaty perhaps, but lovely. Opened in 1993, come and watch glistening gentlemen at work, or just glide around the exhibits, most of which are iron crosses and other pieces of metalwork salvaged from the old cemetery where now stands the Mažvydas Sculptur.

Clock and Watch Museum

Now sporting a rather charming floral clock, the Clock & Watch museum is something every city of note should possess. Time is one of the major things that shapes a city, and time has had its fair crack of the whip in Klaipėda. The mueum itself is dedicated to the history of recording time, from early calendars through to the latest atomic clocks. Emphasis is also placed on the beauty of the clock, and some strange and wonderful examples of the clockmakers art are display here. Well worth a visit this one.
